Built in the late 1930s with dovetail construction, the barn’s design includes doors on all four sides for airflow—a vital feature for drying tobacco. The barn’s natural dirt floor and historic charm set it apart from pre-engineered event spaces.   • Can I schedule a visit to tour the barn and property?
    Yes! Tours can be scheduled by emailing us at blissinthebarn@gmail.com, sending us a message on social media, or directly contacting Cindy Bliss, the owner, who will work with you to find a time that suits your schedule. Call or text 240-882-5003. Since Cindy lives on-site caring for the farm, her schedule is flexible. For your convenience, we also offer virtual tours!
  • What is the max capacity of the barn?
    Bliss in the Barn can comfortably host up to 200 guests, making it a perfect choice for both intimate and larger gatherings. The adjacent field can accommodate any size tent and there are acres of land available for lawn games, parking, and watching the sunset. Please Note: For hourly events, we can only accommodate a maximum capacity of 75 guests.
  • How do you tailor the space for different events?
    Our barn provides a stunning blank canvas with indoor and outdoor flexibility, perfect for any special occasion. Each event is unique, and our owner works closely with clients to adapt the barn and surrounding farm spaces to your needs. We love seeing how clients decorate to bring their vision to life. However, we ask that you do not damage the barn's historic features.   • What is the latest time my event can run?
    Events must conclude by 10 PM with all music turned off, in compliance with local noise ordinances. We cannot accommodate extensions.
  • What’s included in the cost of the Traditional Wedding Package?
    Our Traditional Wedding Package is our most comprehensive package for brides and grooms. We welcome your creative vision and ability to transform our barn into the wedding of your dreams. Bring your wedding planner or create memories with your own ideas...sky's the limit! The Traditional Wedding Package is priced at $5,500 and includes: Use of the authentic historic barn with a 200-person capacity. 5-hour rental on the day of the event with free setup (2 hours prior to the event) 1-hour rehearsal the day before (if venue is available) Additional rehearsal time ($250 per hour, no rehearsal dinners) 4 acres surrounding the barn for your ceremony, reception in the barn, and parking. Ceremony site with an 8’x8’ arch, which can include hanging flower pots, draping, florals, or a custom farm grown floral design (pricing available upon request) Chairs and tables to accommodate 100 guests (additional rentals available).   • What’s included in the Special Events Rental Package? (Non-Weddings)
    Bliss in the Barn’s Special Event Rental Package is an hourly option that is ideal for hosting bridal showers, birthday parties, baby showers, family reunions, corporate events, team outings, and more! Our Special Event Rental Package is $175 per hour (5 hour minimum rental) and includes: Use of our authentic historic barn and plentiful surrounding acreage for outdoor activities/parking Seating for a max capacity of 75 guests Bar and drink tubs (you may provide your own alcohol) Onsite trash/recycling containers Handicap accessible portable restroom (Exclusions: Weddings, Vow Renewals, Quinceaneras, events with more than 75 guests) With a 5 hour minimum rental, this package costs $875. Add-ons vary. You have the option to upgrade amenities to a portable Restroom Trailer for an additional $1,100. Please reach out to discuss your specific event needs, we’re happy to help!
  • Does the cost differ for weekday or weekend weddings?
    Our rates remain the same for weekdays and weekends. We offer military discounts year-round.
  • Is there a private Bridal Suite available?
    Yes, take a look! Our Bridal Suite is a spacious, climate-controlled haven for brides and their parties to prepare for the big day. Featuring a long wooden table with five large mirrors and chairs perfect for makeup and hair, plus a three-panel full standing mirror, it’s designed with beauty and convenience in mind! A vintage-inspired armoire adds rustic charm, while the sink and refrigerator make it easy to store light snacks or refreshments you bring along. There’s also a high-top table and chairs for a quick bite or a moment to relax. Set in what was once the farm’s historic tobacco drying room, the suite features a single window that can remain closed to maintain your privacy until your grand reveal. With its functional elegance and ties to the barn’s rich history, the Bridal Suite is the ideal spot to relax and get ready to say “I do.”
  • Is there a private Groom Suite available?
    While offering a Groom’s Suite is our goal, we do not offer a second private suite at this time. Commonly, grooms get dressed off-site in advance or get ready anywhere that isn’t the Bridal Suite. Stay tuned: The good news is we are currently making plans to renovate a separate house on our property for this purpose! This full renovation is slated for completion Fall of 2025. We hope to include a screened in patio and cigar bar option, in alignment with our historic tobacco roots.
  • Do you offer a Micro Wedding Package?
    No, Bliss in the Barn does not offer a Micro Wedding package at this time. Please refer to our Traditional Wedding Package if you are interested in hosting your wedding at our historic property and barn venue in Maryland.
  • Can I visit the barn before booking?
    Absolutely! We encourage prospective clients to schedule a tour to experience the charm and possibilities of Bliss in the Barn firsthand. We also offer virtual tours.   • What floral options are available? Can I make custom requests?
    Through Zekiah Ridge Farm and Flowers, we provide à la carte floral services using flowers grown right on the farm. Cindy can work with you to create custom bouquets and various arrangements. Depending on design, bridal bouquets commonly average between $80 and $150. Boutonnieres and corsages typically range from $15 to $25 each. Cost of floral options may vary based on complexity and flower type. More pricing information available upon request. Bonus offering! With at least 120 days' notice, our owner Cindy can plant and cultivate seasonal native flowers chosen by you for your special day! She’s happy to discuss ideal flowers for Spring, Summer, and Fall, keeping in mind our climate limitations to produce the most successful fresh flowers. This is a unique offering most venues don’t provide.
  • What is your Bouquet Club? What flowers bloom in specific seasons?
    Our land, Zekiah Ridge Farm and Flowers, grows various blooms, including but not limited to: Spring (April): Snapdragons, dianthus, stock, peonies, eucalyptus Summer (June–October): Zinnias, celosia, sunflowers, eucalyptus. Fall (September–October): Dahlias, sunflowers, dried flowers for wreaths Our owner Cindy works diligently year-round to tend to the land, as there is no off-season for a dedicated flower farmer! During peak season, you can find her selling fresh cut bouquets in local community markets in addition to offering her signature Bouquet Club Subscription – the perfect way to enjoy locally grown flowers all Spring, Summer, and Fall! Through our Bouquet Club, you can get handcrafted, fresh cut local flowers on a seasonal subscription basis! Bouquets can be picked up on a weekly basis for 5 weeks. Spring Bouquet Club (May/June) – 5 bouquets for $100 Summer Bouquet Club (5 bouquets for $100) - July/August Fall Bouquet Club (5 bouquets for $100) - September/October During the operating season, you can pick up your bouquets at Zekiah Ridge Farm on Fridays from 1pm to 6pm or Saturdays at the La Plata Farmers Market from 9am to 1pm. All sales final.
  • Is the flower field visible from the outdoor ceremony area?
    The flower field and hoop house are not visible from the main outdoor ceremony area as they are on opposite sides of the farm. We cannot allow photo sessions within the production fields.
  • Are there accommodations nearby for guests?
    Yes, there are several nearby hotels and bed-and-breakfast options here in La Plata, Maryland. We can happily provide recommendations upon request.
  • Are pets allowed at the venue?
    Yes, pets are welcome for ceremonies and photos! Ensure they are leashed and supervised.
  • Does the barn have heating or air conditioning?
    No, as an authentic tobacco barn, the structure is not equipped with heating or air conditioning. However, our on-site bridal suite is heated! Unlike rebuilt or modernized spaces, Bliss in the Barn is a true historic barn, featuring its original dirt floor and an open-air design for natural ventilation on all 4 sides. We can provide fans to keep your guests comfortable.
  • Can I bring my own food and alcohol?
    Food: Yes, you may bring in a licensed outside caterer of your choosing. In accordance with venue policy, your food must be provided by a licensed caterer for the health and safety of all guests. Alcohol: You may bring your own beer, wine, and liquor to supply the bar at your event. Bliss in the Barn does not impose restrictions on alcohol options. You are not required to purchase your alcohol from our recommended vendors.
  • Can you recommend caterers offering authentic Maryland fare?
    Yes! If you have guests coming in from out of town, we highly recommend seizing all Maryland has to offer when it comes to crafting the perfect menu. We are known for our Chesapeake Bay seafood (particularly blue crab, oysters, and rockfish). We can point you in the direction of several local vendors offering a variety of seafood, meats (fried chicken, pulled pork, beef), and sides. We partner with these reliable vendors for our annual farm-to-table fundraiser, Dining at Zekiah Ridge, which takes place in the barn on the first weekend of October. All funds support our non-profit organization, Veterans Bloom.
  • Why isn't there a concrete floor in the barn?
    Installing a concrete floor would compromise the barn’s historic integrity and rustic appeal. Our barn features its natural, well-maintained dirt floor, a hallmark of its original purpose. This is one of the many authentic features that sets Bliss in the Barn apart from other venues—we were a true tobacco barn first, not a pre-engineered event barn. Our barn is an important piece of Charles County history, and pouring a concrete floor would remove its validity. Bliss in the Barn is the only authentic tobacco barn licensed for events in Maryland.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
    Our cancellation policy is outlined in the rental agreement. Please contact us for specific details. All floral Bouquet Club Subscription sales are final.
  • Are there bathrooms on-site?
    Yes! We provide a clean and easily accessible ADA-compliant portable bathroom on-site, conveniently located near the barn. This is included in both our Traditional Wedding Package and Special Events Hourly Rental Package to ensure all guests have restroom access. For weddings, the Traditional Wedding Package also includes an upgraded Portable Restroom Trailer for added comfort and convenience. If you're booking the Special Events Hourly Rental Package, you have the option to upgrade to a Portable Restroom Trailer for an additional $1,100. The barn itself does not have a permanent restroom indoors. We strive to provide a seamless experience for all guests while maintaining the barn’s historic charm.   • Can I bring a licensed food truck for my event?
    You may, but please note that a food truck may not be ideal for larger events due to longer serving times. Buffet lines are a quicker and more efficient option for large groups.
  • Is smoking allowed at the venue?
    Smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas only. Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the barn or under any covered structures due to county regulations. No hookahs.
  • What is your open flame policy? Can I have s’mores?
    While we do have one solo stove on site you may access, we cannot allow an open fire pit on the farm for safety and liability reasons (no bonfires). If you are interested in an option like serving s’mores to a larger group, there are companies that can partner with us to do this safely!
  • Does Bliss in the Barn offer additional rental options?
    Yes! For an additional fee, consider these additional rental options for your event: Drapery Bistro lighting Elegant china dinnerware rentals (our vintage collection includes 200+ settings!) Custom floral arrangements (bridal bouquets, boutonnieres, centerpieces, arch accents, and more) featuring fresh cut flowers that are homegrown right here on the farm Tables, chairs, and Restroom Trailers beyond what is included in your package And more!     Southern Maryland was a leading tobacco-growing region until the early 2000s, when the government incentivized farmers to switch to other crops. The barn, built in the 1930s, originally served as a drying barn for tobacco. Today, our barn on Zekiah Ridge Farm and Flowers stands as a testament to the area’s rich agricultural history.   • What is Veterans Bloom?
    Veterans Bloom is a non-profit organization founded by Cindy Bliss, whose mission is to assist local veterans in improving their mental health and well-being. Cindy is the owner of Bliss in the Barn farm and events venue in Maryland, and the proud daughter of a Marine Corp Veteran. Southern Maryland News published a story about the remarkable circumstances that led Cindy to launching Veterans Bloom in 2023: Veterans Bloom: A Non-Profit Helping Veterans Bloom Proceeds from our annual Dining at Zekiah Ridge fundraiser (a farm-to-table dinner in the barn) help to fund this initiative. In 2024, Veterans Bloom partnered with Leashes of Valor and raised proceeds to help supply a service dog to a Veteran at no cost to them! This is a meaningful cause and it’s great to get local farmers and other businesses in the community together to support veterans through sponsoring different aspects of the dinner, from food and drinks to entertainment and a silent auction of donated items.
